Write the headline. Print the paper. Find out what the town thinks. Five stories drop on the wire every morning. Pick the lead, pick what runs underneath it, pick a photograph, then write the headline yourself out of fragments and put it on the press. Nobody here will tell you whether it was any good. The town will. You answer to three people and you cannot keep all three: readers want heat, the law wants truth, and the proprietor wants his own opinions back in print by Thursday. In the morning: circulation, complaints, one letter to the editor, and a phone call from somebody who is not happy. Print something thin about somebody who can afford a solicitor and you will get a writ.
